Today is the anniversary of the battle of Agincourt
|
"This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."
Gives the two fingered salute to the dastardly French*

yes the French were very complicit in aiding in America's rebellion against our great empire. And yes it cost them what is now Canada and other colonies.

Sounds like Swiss is carrying on his families centuries in the making tradition of getting bent over and now takes pride in it.
It explains his leering of younger women at his middle age, it's the only power he thinks he can muster.
Gone six now so he's off on the prowl.

Perhaps the biggest French victory over Britain was by proxy - the American Revolution.
Ironically, the French monarchy's funding for that Revolution, and subsequent near state bankruptcy, was one of the factors in the French one.

Anyone remember Googling "French military victories" back in the day, and being redirected to a page asking if you meant "French military defeats"?

Spot on. That's what I was trying to explain. DNA wise the English are Germanic/Celtic. As are lowland Scots.
We were slaves to the Norman toffs. They raped us. The biggest fucking Grosvenor Duke of Westminster's. GGGGG grandfather Gross Veneur. Fat hunter.
But for that our language is the richest in the world. They also brought sophistication. Pig/Pork and Cow/Beef.

Actually if you read about the subject on mapping the DNA contributions of various waves of invaders of the British Isles you’ll find that there is minute, vertually negligible Norman/French in the general British population.
The vast majority of English Medieval armies were just that.
Just with the Froggy garlic munching toffs in charge.
The Normans didn’t invade to turn the English into French, they invaded so that they could become English.
You’d have been pretty hard pressed to find any of the aristocracy or the upper classes who were fluent in French by the time of Agincourt.

On the Hugenots - they reckon that even when Victoria first sat on the throne, 1% of London-born people spoke French as their first language.
They must've been a stubborn lot - but no surprise as their ancestors resisted everything from financial disadvantage to torture and execution to not be Catholic.

Who cares? Plus many of our ancestors were proper French, including mine.
Spitalfields, Whitechapel and particularly Bethnal Green were basically originally populated by the French from about 1595 for two hundred years.
If your family was from the East End, it's 99.9% certain you have loads of French Huguenot blood in your veins and at the time of Agincourt, your family was FRENCH.
Bet you glad there was no Brexit bollocks back then!
